In this episode of Engage and Thrive, I tackle a dangerously common misconception that remote working is the cure for burnout. Burnout isn’t just about where you work. It’s about unclear boundaries, no time to recover, and relentless context switching. Too many people leave corporate life expecting freedom, only to rebuild chaos with Slack on 24/7, Zoom fatigue, and no real structure. In fact, 41% of remote workers in a 2024 Deloitte survey reported struggling to disconnect from work, and over half said they regularly work outside of standard hours. Flexibility without boundaries is just burnout in better lighting.
Remote work offers the illusion of autonomy, but without intentional systems and space to actually recharge, it can lead to more stress, not less. In this episode, I explore why remote workers often burn out harder and faster than their office-based counterparts. Whether you’re running a remote business, freelancing solo, or managing a global team, it’s time to stop glamorising remote work and start designing it better.
As mentioned in the episode, I shared some of my own systems in this blog on notification overwhelm, including how I use Focus Mode, calendar blocks, and stronger boundaries to protect my energy. And if you’ve ever felt pulled away from your work by laundry, dishes, or “just one quick chore”, this piece on the hidden cost of housework hits a little too close to home.
This isn’t about bashing remote life. I love remote work. But remote does not mean repair. If you’re still feeling drained outside the 9 to 5, this is your sign to rewire remote life before it wrecks your energy.
