What’s happening outside my industry has no effect on my business, so I don’t need to pay attention to external factors.

Listen or Watch on

In Episode 76 of Engage And Thrive, I take on the misconception that “what happens outside my industry has no effect on my business.” The reality is that external factors in business can make or break your strategy. These influences may be out of your control, but they have a direct impact on your ability to grow, adapt, and stay competitive. A framework that helps to monitor these external factors is called a PESTLE Analysis, which breaks external influences into six areas: Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental. I will talk you through each area with real-world examples: Trump’s tariffs reshaping trade flows, the Ukraine war influencing global supply chains, the EU Accessibility Act and GDPR affecting digital platforms, and the rapid rise of AI changing how products are built and consumed. Social shifts are also highlighted, such as generational changes in career aspirations and the role of influencers in shaping consumer behaviour.

The episode goes beyond defining PESTLE. I explain how to use it as a practical tool in business. That means reviewing and updating it regularly, not just once a year, and linking it to scenario planning and risk management. I also share how teams can divide responsibility for monitoring each PESTLE area and how solo entrepreneurs can lean on tools like Google Alerts, government updates, industry groups, and professional networks to stay informed.
