The best leaders are always available to their teams, because being instantly reachable shows commitment and keeps everything moving.

Listen or Watch on

There is a belief in business that the best leaders are the ones who are always available to their teams. The myth says being instantly reachable shows commitment and keeps everything moving. In reality, the “always on” approach does more harm than good, and that is where leadership boundaries come in.

In this episode I challenge the misconception that leadership equals constant availability. Being permanently on call creates decision fatigue, erodes focus, and sets unhealthy expectations for teams. Instead of leading strategically, you get trapped in firefighting, chasing every notification, and reacting instead of planning. Leadership boundaries are essential for protecting your energy, your time, and your ability to see the bigger picture.

I explain the opportunity cost of always being available. Every hour spent in unnecessary meetings or reactive tasks is time taken away from growth, strategy, and building systems that scale. Smart leaders build structure into their days with tools like time blocking, buffer time, and project management platforms that reduce noise and give teams clarity without requiring constant approval.

I also explore the importance of switching off. From unsubscribing to newsletters you never read, to labelling and auto-archiving emails, to taking a proper lunch break or even finishing early on a Friday, these are the habits that protect long term effectiveness. Leadership is not about being online all the time. It is about being present when it matters most while creating the space to think, plan, and grow.
